Quarterly rates for stored marketing words in Product Hunt launches and PubMed abstracts alongside sampled Hacker News comments. Product Hunt rises sharply in 2023 and declines after late 2024; PubMed rises later. The sampled Hacker News rate changes less than the other series.

Hype vocabulary declined in the Product Hunt sample

The Product Hunt rate peaked at 6.89 times baseline in the second half of 2024 and fell to 1.41 in the first half of 2026. PubMed abstracts reached 3.62 times baseline over the latter period. These counts describe word use in the stored samples and do not identify AI authorship.

Chart comparing the twelve largest risers in the Hacker News census against the nineteen words published as AI writing tells. The risers run from claude at 601 times its pre-ChatGPT rate through slop at 286, anthropic at 282 and mcp at 214 down to antigravity at 42. All nineteen tell words fall inside one narrow band between 0.76 and 1.94 times, against the no-change line. The risers began rare, a median of 0.37 occurrences per million tokens, while the tell words began at 3.22.

This guide publishes a list of words that are supposed to mark generated prose. Two billion words of human writing put nineteen of them between 0.76 and 1.94 times their pre-ChatGPT rate. 796 other words moved by two times or more and none of them is on the list.
